Working on the blog

Good Friday to you.

As you can see, our powerpoint presentations are not working on the blog. I should say, they're not working at BMHS. They work fine from outside the school. We're trying to get the site to work here, but who knows?

The business research and presentations has been a rather bizarre project for me. I thought we would be done last Friday. I don't want to start a new unit today, so I guess Monday we'll start Unit 9, Credit. Today, we'll finish showing the PowerPoint shows. All grades for this 200-point project will be entered this afternoon. Please check your progress reports and let me know if you see any glaring errors.

Bell Work:  What promise do consumers make every time they use their credit cards?

Today: Chapter 25.1  The Basics of Credit
Our objectives will be to:

  • Define credit and indicate three factors that determine the interest that will be paid.
  • Name different groups in our society that use credit.
  • Identify three advantages and disadvantages of using credit.
Read the Standard & Poor's Advantages of Debt on page 442 of your text.

Wednesday, and the living is easy

Awesome students, today is the last day to finish your PowerPoint presentations. On Thursday, they will only be worth, at most, 70% for "A" quality.

"You can have everything you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want. (Zig Ziglar)

Bell Work: (This actually leads us into tomorrow's lesson.) In what ways are you planning on using credit in the future?

Thank you,

Mr. Burd

Thanks, George.

"I cannot tell a lie."
 Needless to say, George
said these words long before
he was President.
Well, once again we are thankful to our first President for being so brave and honest, and especially for being born in the middle of February so that, 279 years later, we get a day off from school.

Bell Work: . Now that you know more about the company you researched, what advice would you give to someone who might be considering investing in that company? Why? (As always, use complete sentences.)

Tuesday & Wednesday: We will continue to complete and present our research on the company of our choice. I really appreciate some of the quality work that many of you have done. Keep it up.

Did you notice some of the slides in the previous posts? Good work.

We will be starting a new Unit on Thursday. Chapters 25-29 in our text deal with credit. You will discover some new and interesting facts. You will also glean some helpful hints and tips about the nature and uses of credit.

On Friday, we will be looking at completing chapter 25 and you will be assigned a new project. In groups, you will prepare an educational segment for a news magazine on the topic of credit. Fun, fun, fun.

Thank you,

Mr. Burd

Friday Finishes

When I ran competitively, I always tried to run my best at the finish. What a great feeling it was to be able to sprint through the last 400 meters of a marathon--26 miles and I still had a kick at the finish.

Fridays in school could be like that. Teachers often enter grades over the week-end. What will they remember? They will remember how their students finished on Friday. Did the student sprint for the finish? Or did he goof off?

Bell Work: Ultimate Electronics is closing its doors this month. Do 10 minutes of research and state why you think they have not succeeded.

Today, we will continue to do research on the company you have chosen, and students who have finished will be presenting their work.

Thank you,

Mr. Burd

Thursday Morning

"Would you tell me please which way I ought to walk from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where--" said Alice.
Then it doesn't matter which way to walk," said the Cat.

Do you know where you want to get to? Do you know how to get there?

Students, since the majority of us are not yet ready to present our slide presentations, we will continue the research today and start to present on Friday.

Bell Work: In your research, what is the most interesting thing you learned about your company?

Home Depot has announced it will be hiring for all its stores this spring. If you're 18, get your application in now. They are a great company to work for. These are temporary positions (as all jobs are), but can turn into something more permanent.
Check out the article in yesterday's AZ Republic

As always, thanks for all you do. It is my honor to be your teacher.

Wednesday updates

Good morning, Awesome students.

"You can finish school – but you never finish your education.  You can make school easy; but an education is never easy.  An education requires personal, deliberate commitment; it demands constant effort and it is a lifetime project. Going to school doesn't make you educated any more than going to a gym makes you muscular. "  (Rick Burd with assistance from Zig Ziglar)

Bell Work: Maybe I'm cheating here, but...In all my years in business, I never found a better mission statement than "Treat others the way you would want to be treated." If you were to give advice to a new teacher, what would you say?

Today, you need to finish our research on the company you have chosen. I would like to start showing the presentations Thursday.

Thank you,

Mr. Burd

Tuesday Mornings at BMHS

It is just starting to get light out when I get here. Usually there are only four or five cars in the parking lot when I arrive. The gates are unlocked at 6 a.m., but I don't get here that early any more. Some students get dropped off before 7 a.m. They wait for the cafeteria to open, or just hang out around campus. I unlock the library, and then my room. I start up the desk computer and check my notes to make sure I'm on target for the week's lesson plans.

Objectives on board? Check. Bell work sent to Computer apps? Check. Blog ready for Intro to Biz? Check. All e-mail answered? Check. Let's light this candle!!

Bell Work: How is a franchise like a sole proprietorship? How is it different?

Today, in the fascinating world of business, your mission is to choose a company and do the research necessary to give a "professional" looking PowerPoint Presentation. I am much more concerned with the content of the material presented than any bells and whistles you might display in your PowerPoint. In other words, seek first to present factual and informative material. Do not try to "Wow" us with a bunch of fancy slides.

I will be around to help anyone with the details. Let me know, OK?

Thank you,

Mr. Burd

Intro to Biz, Monday, February 14

Happy Valentine's Day.

Bell Work:
    • Think about starting your own skate board business that sells boards you design and make. According to our book, page 102, what part of your business would be described as production, and what part of your business would be described as procurement?
Monday, we shall...finish our Chapters 5 & 6 test. Start a new project--see attached.handout. (sorry)

Thank you,

In To Biz, Friday, 11 February

Valentine's Day is Monday. I have a suggestion: If you love someone, tell them.
Don't wait. Do it now.
Friday: our objective is to finish up Chapter 6 Business Ownership & Operations
We will:

  • Differentiate the 6 Types of Businesses
  • Describe the 5 Functions of Business
  • Show how the 5 functions all interact with one another
There will be a test during the last 30 minutes of the period on both chapters 5 & 6.

Here is another slide show from one of our awesome students. Whoops, the site is blocked. I'll upload it from home.

Thank you,

Intro to Biz, Thursday 10 February

Good Morning, Awesome students.

I'm sorry that we fell a little bit behind on Wednesday. There were many adjustments that had to be made due to this new format.

Our objectives today are:

  • Differentiate the six types of businesses
  • Describe the five functions of business
  • Discuss how the five functions of business relate to each other.
That's a lot. We will have a handout on Chapter 6.2. (Next week I hope to have your handouts on the computer.)
There will be a PowerPoint Presentation that we will all watch.
Bell Work:  There are six types of businesses. (Note: this is different from the three major types of business organizations.)
They are:
  1. Producers
  2. Processors
  3. Manufacturers
  4. Wholesalers and Intermediaries
  5. Retailers
  6. Services
Pick two of these types and list a company that falls under that category. For example, Bell Copper Company in Miami, AZ is a producer. They take raw material from the ground.

As mentioned, you can do your bell work on paper and turn them in on Fridays, or you can click on the "Mr. Burd" link below and e-mail me. A student's project is below. Thanks, Lauren.

Thank you,

Intro to Biz, Wednesday 9 Feb

Welcome. I am glad to see that you have found our blog for the Intro to Biz class.
All of life is an experiment.
This blog will be one of them. It might become a great tool for our learning together. Or, it might fail miserably. But, what the heck? Let's try it, OK?

Bell Work: On Tuesday, we studied about the three major types of business organizations. Why does an entrepreneur need to know about the different types of business ownership?

Our objective today is: Describe how coops and nonprofits are like and unlike corporations and franchises.

Your task is to read pages 94-98 in the book. You can access the book from this site: Glencoe. User name is itb2008 and password is jU6uspat.  (about 18 minutes)

After reading, break into five groups. (no more than 5 per group). Each group will create a PowerPoint presentation on one of these topics:

  • sole proprietorships,
  • corporations
  • partnerships
  • cooperatives
  • and nonprofit organizations
The presentation will be 5 slides that show the advantages and disadvantages of the type of business, the percent of that type of business in the US, and how much each type of business adds to our economy.

Please let me know what else you would like to see on this site. Let's make it a class project that we could proudly show our administrators, OK?

Mr. Burd
