"A Champion does the things he doesn't want to do." (Tom Hopkins)
My guess is that the company is trying to employ a marketing tactic not used since the mid nineties which was also used by Marvel comics main competition, D.C. comics. D.C. decided to kill off one their most influential characters, Superman, because of low sales. After the issue in which Superman "died" sales dropped drastically but skyrocketed after Superman returned to comics. D.C. attempted a similar tactic with their other property Batman in a series entitled "Knight fall" inn which Batman is paralyzed from the waist down due to a injury sustained from a fight with the character Bane. After the injury batman finds a replacement to take his place as the dark knight. After a while, in a way that one would expect from a "Rocky" movie Batman undergoes rigorous training to take back his title from Jean Paul Valley, Batman's replacement. Also based on Marvel comics history with killing characters there's almost always someway that the writer's will bring him back. So judging by history it's most likely that this is only temporary to try and increase sales. Besides, this does not affect the main continuity which most people are familiar with. This article is referring to the "Ultimate" comics which was created to represent some of the classic story arcs from the original comics and "revamping" them to appeal to younger audiences of the current generation or the small group of the population that believes comic books are too childish with more modernized themes of prejudice and terrorism.
