My, oh my, oh Monday

Bell Work: Do you know these logos? Click here.

Take 8 minutes and see how many you get. Winner gets something.

The next two days will include a marvelous opportunity to create a new logo for Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Harley-Davidson Unit Project Guidelines
Project Overview:
            Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
The average Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider is in his/her middle age or older and has a full time career or full time job.  Harley-Davidson would like to appeal more to younger generations (20 – 30 year olds).  Your assignment is to create a marketing strategy to accomplish this goal.  Specifically, you need to do the following:
·                    Research what products Harley-Davidson currently offers to customers.
·        Discuss, in your own words, why middle-aged consumers are the major source of revenue for Harley-Davidson.
·        Discuss, in three paragraphs, how you would market Harley-Davidson motorcycles and accessories to a younger market.  (Think about price range, design, style, accessories, clothing, etc)
·        Create a new logo and slogan for Harley-Davidson Motor Company.
·        Create one print ad promoting Harley-Davidson to a younger audience.
Grading Criteria:
This project is due on:_______Tuesday 24 May
1.      Research what products Harley-Davidson currently offers to customers.  20 points.
This section must be typed using Microsoft Word.  Explain in detail the products that Harley-Davidson currently offers to the public.  (Motorcycle types, clothing, accessories, etc).  Be specific and give details.  This section should be about 2 or 3 paragraphs in length.
2.      Discuss, in your own words, why middle-aged consumers are the major source of revenue for Harley-Davidson.  20 points.
This section must be typed using Microsoft Word.  After completing the research phase of the project, you should come to a conclusion as to why most Harley-Davidson riders are middle-aged or older.  Explain your conclusion in one paragraph.
3.      Discuss, in three paragraphs, how you would market Harley-Davidson motorcycles and accessories to a younger market.  (Think about price range, design, style, accessories, clothing, etc).  20 points.
This section must be typed using Microsoft Word.  Explain in three paragraphs how you plan to sell Harley-Davidson motorcycles and other products to a younger crowd.  Would you develop new products that are more appealing?  If so, what products?  Would you try to change the H-D image?  If so, how?  Would you change the price of the products?  If so, which products and what prices?
4.      Create a new logo and slogan for Harley-Davidson Motor Company.  20 points.
This section should be done on plain, white, computer paper using colored pencils, markers, or crayons.  Hand draw a new logo for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company.  Remember, you are trying to appeal to a young audience.  Think about logos that you like and dislike to get you started.  Look at the existing logo.
Under your new logo, write a new slogan that appeals to a young audience.
5.      Create one print ad promoting Harley-Davidson to a younger audience.  20 points.
This section should be completed on plain, white, computer paper using colored pencils, markers, or crayons.  Design one creative print ad that will be placed in a magazine to help promote Harley-Davidson to a younger audience.  You should include your logo and slogan in the ad.

Does it Really Matter?

"No matter how close to yours and another's steps have grown,
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone." (Jackson Browne)
It's Sunday afternoon. About an hour ago, we got a phone call from our son. A friend of mine died. Richard was 62 years old. He lived hard. He died hard. He made so many mistakes in his life, and, in his last six months, had so many regrets.

But Richard did some really good things, too. You see, he was the father to my step-children, Karen and Richie. Karen is the mother of my very best friend in the whole world: Daniel, my 8-year-old grandson. Karen's also the mother of the most incredible person I've ever known: Anna, my 6-year-old granddaughter.

There's sadness everywhere right now. I cry as I write this. The tears aren't so much for me, but for the ones I love--my step-children and my grandchildren. I hurt because they hurt.

On days like this, it makes me wonder: What does matter?

Wednesday Work

Greetings, awesome students.

Bell Work: Are marketing a product and selling a product the same thing? What's the difference?

How well would this store do in Phoenix?
I will assume that the class did not get that far on Monday, am I right? Well, today we start a new unit: Marketing. This is probably my favorite subject in the textbook because I spent real close to 30 years in the field, and I loved the business world. That world was fast-paced, exciting, interesting and highly profitable.

If you can master the art of marketing, there is probably no occupation that you cannot successfully use that art in.
How well would Asimo sell in Haiti?

We will be doing some handouts, and watching a PowerPoint today. Later in this two-week section we will have a marketing project that I think you will enjoy. Bon Voyage.

Monday 4 April

Good Day, awesome students.

I won't be able to come in today.  You might need to create your own bell work sheets for the week, or write down your answers and transfer them later.
Bell Work·         How do businesses attract customers? Think about the last item you bought. What were the influencing factors in your decision to buy that particular brand?
Today, We are starting a new Unit. Chapters 13 and 14 in our textbook.
Objectives:

  • ·         define marketing
  • ·         identify the functions of marketing
  • ·         list the elements of the marketing mix

  1. Read chapter 13.1, pages 218-221. As you read, create a two-column table that lists the seven functions of marketing on one side, and an explanation of that function on the other.
  2. Read the BusinessWeek Reader on page 220. When finished, go to glencoe.com, and fill in the answers in Word for the case study.
  3. Also, when you are finished reading Chapter 13.1, do the self-check on glencoe.com, and e-mail the results to me.

Friday Finishes

Bell Work·
When was the last time someone made a positive suggestion to you that you used? What made you change? Logic or Emotions?
Today is the first day of the rest of your life. Success begins with a decision. Choose to do the right thing. So many people are more concerned with finding the right person rather than being the right person.
Friday, ·       SStudents will write a personal business letter to the Mars company--based upon their surveys and data collection. Save the document as Mars Letter, and e-mail it to me.
Also,  Students will work in pairs to create a five-slide presentation to Mars, using various design templates, animation and transitions. This pOwerpOint will include the graphs, charts, polls, etcetera, and be used along with the business letter to persuade Mars to accept your suggestions to improve their product.

Close:
·        Students will complete these statements:
o       The best thing about this project was…
o       This project would have been better if…
When finished, e-mail all documents to me (click below.)

Thursday Morning

Good Morning.
Bell Work: ·        What is the most interesting aspect of the m&ms’ company you found in your research?
Today, as you work in pairs, you should continue to create charts in excel, based on your data collection from the m&ms project. If you have finished the excel portion, the next step is to create a survey. Each member of your team should ask five other students their opinion on which colors to keep, which colors to remove, which to add, which flavors should be added, etc.
After the survey, your team needs to write a personal business letter to Mars, offering your suggestions to the company on how they could improve their product--based upon your survey, research, and personal opinion.
After the letter, your team needs to put together a PowerPoint presentation that reinforces visually the points you made in the letter.
